From fine art to visual effects art director on major Hollywood blockbusters, Steve Matson is an artist that loves to constantly push the limits of his talent; always exploring new ways to visualize his ideas. Steve Matson was raised in Hawaii a stone’s throw from the beach. His mother was an artist and recognized his talent from a very early age. She knew the way to nurture his talent and keep him out of mischief was making sure he was drawing and painting regularly. Steve trained at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and started out painting t-shirts in Waikiki. He then worked as an illustrator in Los Angeles before moving to San Francisco to work on a new way to approach Art… the original “Paint-box”, the very first computer that an artist could use to paint. This technology fascinated him, opening him up a whole new world of possibilities. Bringing his unique artistic talent to the world of computers, embarked him on a 20 year career that has led him all around the Pacific Rim. He has lived and worked in Australia and Asia on many award winning commercials and films. More recently, Steve has been living in Hermosa Beach California, where he has painted background environments for such films as Polar Express, Star Wars EP3, Superman, The Chronicles of Narnia, Surfs Up and Beowulf amongst others. He is currently working as visual effects art director on a major motion picture – to be announced… But as the saying goes… you can take the boy out of Hawaii but you can’t take Hawaii out of the boy. Throughout all his travels his heart and his artistic passion has always been the tropical paradise of his home. “The further away from my home I traveled, the more I missed its beauty, it’s people, it’s mystery and the more I am compelled to capture it, to paint it.”
